With The Makanda Project:

Saturday, September 11, 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, First Church in Roxbury, 10 Putnam Street

Free to the public. It will be a special program celebrating what would have been Makanda Ken McIntyre’s 90th birthday.
The concert will also be live-streamed. We would rather see you in person, but if you live outside of Boston, or are otherwise unable to physically come . . . . We have made arrangements so that the technical problems that interfered with our streaming earlier this summer won’t be an issue.
We have put together a program of music that covers and highlights various styles and techniques that Makanda favored as a composer. We will also be joined for the occasion by Richard Harper, one of the musicians who were closest to Dr. McIntyre and most knowledgeable about his music.
Richard Harper was originally a student of Makanda Ken McIntyre’s; he then went on to join him on the faculty of the State University of New York at Old Westbury and also play piano in his ensembles throughout the 1970s. (He is featured on both the “Wildflowers” recordings from Studio Rivbea, and the SteepleChase album “Introducing the Vibrations.”) He also delivered a moving eulogy at Makanda’s funeral, which can be read at https://www.mkmjazz.com/tributes.php (click on Richard Harper at the right). Much of his current work in New York is as a trombone player, and on September 11 he will mostly play in our trombone section, while also being featured on piano for selected numbers. He will speak about Makanda as well.
Also for this event, our friends at MassArt’s sparc! the ArtMobile will join us and organize a live painting activity – for the first time since the pandemic began.
